Jack Campbell

Jack is the main character in the Infinite Divergence universe. At the time the correction started, he was forty seven years old. As a baby, he was left on the doorstep of a foster home run by a group of monks. No one has been able to track down who his mother or father were. Shortly after his birth he was visited by a Light who noticed he had a more powerful mind than other humans. Throughout his life, the Lights monitored and documented his activities. He was the only child who stayed at the home for his entire youth and had many friends at the home, but no one stayed long enough to feel like family to him. The monks were more administrators than parents, since the home was meant to take care of children in transition between foster and adoptive parents, so he didn't have much contact with them. The closest person to family was Owen the owner of the towns only grocery store and volunteer caretaker for the foster home.

Youth

As a child, Jack was known for standing up to bullies and protecting those they harassed. This resulted in him getting into fights on many occasions, usually on the losing end once the bullies called in friends. He has never been married or in a serious relationship, always describing himself as a professional bachelor.

Beginnings

Before the correction began Jack had lived almost his entire life in Brentwood, British Columbia. After finishing high school, he left Brentwood temporarily to train for search and rescue. Once basic training was done he was stationed at a the Chilliwack base to receive live training from Fred Anderson. He quickly developed a reputation for having lightning fast reflexes and being able to avoid dangerous situations before they happened. Fred convinced Jack to buy the old house next door to his in Brentwood, bringing Jack back to his roots. Jack initially thought that living so far away from their base would be too inconvenient. But after staying as a guest in Fred's home for a week he realized how much he had missed the isolation of being in such a small remote town.

The Side Business

Even though Jack's job as a rescue specialist had him taking care of all southern British Columbia, there were always times when nobody needed help. Fortunately for Jack, those times were usually predictable since they depended on the season and how many people would be in the woods hiking, fishing, or camping. During these slow times Jack, and Fred, usually took one month off work. During his first long break from work, Jack came up with the idea that he and Fred could start a part time business as guides for any tourists who came through Brentwood. Their guide business quickly became popular, but since it was not their full time job they initially had to turn many away. Jack decided to start recruiting other people from the town to work as guides while he and Fred were working their full time jobs. As the years went on, he and Fred began taking more time off from their search and rescue jobs to work as guides.

Seeing Things

Jack frequently had visions of events that were going to happen, but never told anyone for fear they would think he was crazy. At first he wrote it off a dejavu, since he had only seen minor events from his life. But that changed when he had a vision of a group of lost hikers who had gotten far off their intended course. One week after the vision, he and Fred were called on to find a group of hikers who had not been seen for almost a day since they were scheduled to return. The hikers had left their intended plans with friends, who gave then to the search and rescue. As soon as Jack saw the plan, he recognized them from his vision. He was still wary of telling anyone he could predict future event, so instead he told Fred he had seen a weather report which indicated there was a high possibility of bad weather in an area between them and the hikers intended destination. He convinced Fred to fly around the area, in order to bring them closer to where he knew the hikers actually were. Fred agreed to fly through the area last, hoping the weather would be calmer later in the day. When they were within view of where the hikers had ended up Jack pretended he saw a flash of light, giving Fred a reason to fly to them. They found the hikers, all uninjured but very confused as to where they were. After this vision, Jack started trying to see more events in greater detail. whenever he was in a situation where lives we in danger, he usually was able to see what he needed to do. Many times his visions came after seeing a bright Light. This light was caused by the part of his mind that came from the Light Arlon.

Hybrid Mind

Jacks mind is actually a hybrid of a Human Nexus mind and the Light mind of Arlon. The Dren Nexus Eximius had communicated with Jacks mind during one of the thousands of time it was waiting for a time wave to pull him through his life. They discussed Eximius's vision of merging a Light minds with Nexus minds to create a more powerful Nexus. After decade of debate and discussion, Jack eventually agreed to the procedure as did the Juvo Nexus Didov. The procedure did was not a complete success though, since another Light, Igz, inadvertently stumbled upon the Dren when the merge was half complete. Igz believed he was witnessing the Dren attempting to destroy the Light and attempted to stop the procedure. The result was Jack only receiving Arlon's recent memories and personality, and Walter receiving Arlon's older memories. Igz and Mesa, the Light being merged with the Juvo Nexus, had their minds pulled from their lattices then thrown into the empty space the Dren were using to transport minds for a merge.

Obsession

Throughout his life Jack has always been obsessed with high tech and science. His home was filled with every imaginable electronic gadget and toy. Until his mind was separated from his brain, he did not understand how any of it worked. He had tried learning, but decided it was beyond his abilities. When he first remembered his mind was merged with Arlon's he believed his obsession must come from part of Arlon's personality. But he soon remembered that he had been like that before the merge. The obsession is actually a core part of all Nexus minds.

Unusual Ability

The Light's had given Jack and other humans multiple short simple descriptions in their systems on Earth. Jacks were: Nexus, Extreme loyalty, Memory keeper. Jack initially had no idea what memory keeper could mean, until he realized his min was saving many of Fred's memories from each of his lifetimes. He eventually discovered that a memory keeper is extremely rare, making him wonder if there were going to be more situations where his ability would be needed.
